Nestled in the rolling Dorset countryside sits Mapperton, a Tudor / Jacobean historic home overlooking stunning Italianate valley gardens and voted ’the Nation’s Finest Manor' by Country Life magazine.
Mapperton is home to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and contains an important furniture and picture collection, reflecting the family’s contribution to Britain’s naval history. This year there is a display on the life of Martha Ray, mistress of the 4th Earl of Sandwich, celebrating her work as an accomplished 18th century singer.
Elegantly restored The Coach House café onsite offers a delicious range of lunches and teas, including gourmet sandwiches developed by the 11th Earl himself. The café is licensed and our Visitors and their children will enjoy our outdoor seating, watching our resident cockerels, bantams, runner ducks and Percy, our giant African tortoise.
Mapperton is the host location for the Smithsonian Channel series An American Aristocrats Guide to Great Estates with Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, Julie Montagu, daughter-in-law to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich. Mapperton will also feature in the forthcoming Netflix release Rebecca, starring Lily James
With a range of ceremony locations, seating in The Coach House for up to 120 Wedding Breakfast guests or a marquee on our croquet lawn, Mapperton is also a stunning location for an English country wedding. The unspoilt landscape and breathtaking valley gardens set this venue apart from other country house locations. Whether modern classic, contemporary chic or quintessentially romantic we offer a beautiful blank canvas for you to host your day, your way.
Mapperton hosts a variety of events through the year, including Snowdrop Sundays in February, Spring and Autumn plant fairs, an Easter trail, and an outdoor Shakespeare performance. Our summer visitors can enjoy a Creepy Crawly and bug trails, and our Halloween Fun Days are a popular family favourite.
