Baboo Gelato Ltd

Multi-award winning artisanal ice cream maker Baboo Gelato was set up in Bridport, West Dorset by professional gelatiere Annie Hanbury and her husband Sam in 2015.

We make fifty flavours of ice cream with local, seasonal ingredients. We sell through our four seaside kiosks in Lyme Regis, Morcombelake, West Bay, and Weymouth and to a rapidly growing number of local chefs and delicatessens.

We hope that you will visit our kiosks where we encourage you to taste our flavours before you buy. It is important to us that buying an ice cream is a special experience, as it is such a happy product, and you should really be able to savour such an affordable luxury. Our teams at our kiosks are friendly and know our products very well; they make a mean cappuccino and great cuppa too.

And we haven’t forgotten your four legged friend. After a refreshing walk along the beach, when you’re enjoying a well deserved ice cream, give your pooch a tub of Doggy Doggy Yum Yum. We created Doggy Doggy especially for dogs, and it is entirely dairy free and organic, made with coconut yoghurt, banana and peanut butter. Judging by the amount of return business, the dogs love it.

Although we’re a quite new company we’ve been lucky to have won a lot of recognition and a wonderfully loyal following. In 2016 we won Champion Ice Cream from Taste of the West, and Best Dairy Producer in the Taste of Dorset awards. Since then we have been a finalist in the Taste of the West awards in 2017, 2018 and 2019; and have been awarded 12 Gold medals from Taste of the West, and 15 Great Taste Stars from the Guild of Fine Foods. Our Sea Pink Sorbet was Highly Commended in the finals of the Great British Food awards in 2019.

Part of what makes our ice cream so successful is that we make it from scratch. That is very unusual in the world of ice cream where it is more normal to use flavours, colourings and pastes. We use local organic milk from a wonderful farm in North Perrott where the cows graze on rich organic meadows of wild grasses. Much of our fruit comes from our own rambling garden and orchard, or from local fruit farms and suppliers.

Where we can’t source locally, we buy the world’s best, whether it’s Valrhona Chocolate from France, Vanilla pearls from Madagascar, or hazelnuts, walnuts and pistachios direct from farms in Piedmont, Veneto, and Bronte, Sicily.

We spend a crazy amount of time on our search for ingredients. At home we’ve built up a large fruit garden and orchard, including over thirty different types of heritage apple tree, and ten different varieties of pear. The joy of growing at home is that we can use varieties of autumn raspberry, rhubarb and gooseberry that are often unusual but give us the flavour and natural colouring we want. Our lab is filled with samples of every description as we experiment and fine tune ideas and recipes. Exploring the extraordinary wealth of flavour in local fruit is just awesome.

We make no apologies for the seasonality of our flavours. We will only pick or buy fruit when it is at its best. We then puree and freeze it. When it runs out, that’s it. We’re not going to buy cotton wool flavoured, imported strawberries in December.

A couple of final comments: Why is it called Baboo? Because Annie’s grandmother was a brave Russian lady who escaped Stalin in 1930 to bring up five children on her own. Annie learnt to cook at her apron strings, and always called her ‘Baboo’. And why gelato? Well, because we think it is a better recipe, as it uses less fat and less sugar, so we get a much stronger taste of the real ingredients. But that’s for you to test and tell us.

Whether you are a granny or a toddler, a dog walker or a fossil hunter, a tourist or a local, we hope you’ll come and visit us, and have a taste of our delicious Baboo Gelato.
