Fresh from the oven…

From actual bake houses to cafes and tearooms serving freshly baked bread made and delivered that morning, there are a whole host of mouth watering treats, both sweet and savoury for you to enjoy while visiting Dorset.

Try a slice of history

You’ll have heard of Dorset Apple Cake – the apples grown in the region are some of the best thanks to the warm climate and the people of Dorset are proud of the various produce created using those apples. You can find out more about the ciders, wines and juices by looking at our Drinks section but one of the best loved creations is Dorset Apple Cake. Dorset Apple Cake is moist, tart and utterly delicious, make sure to grab a slice when at a bakery or tearoom and if you can, enjoy it warm with some clotted cream!

Another historical bake that originated here in Dorset is the Dorset Knob. These savoury biscuits are made from bread dough with extra sugar and butter and are often rolled and shaped by hand. These days they’re a lot rarer and only made by one producer, but make sure to visit the county during May to take part in the annual knob throwing competition. The festival allows attendees to see how far they can throw these biscuits, as well as taking part in knob and spoon races, knob darts, knob painting and guess the weight of the knob. Of course, lots of sampling of Dorset Knobs are encouraged too!
